Feminist Is Not A Secular Word – Kimberly George
Mix messages about gender from society, with messages from evangelicalism and you end up with a caricature of masculinity and femininity. Just what are these harmful messages we hear, and how do they influence us as men and women? How might the feminist concept of “finding one’s voice” apply not only to women, but to men, as well? What is the work of redemption that remains to be done in restoring the image of God as given to both genders in the Genesis story?
Doable Evangelism – Randy Siever
About 90% of Christians do not participate in any form of evangelism, while 75% of non-Christians are ignored. Doable Evangelism is about engaging the 90% with ordinary attempts that are fun and doable and reclaiming evangelism as a spiritual practice
Learn:
• Why evangelism isn’t normal.
• How to make evangelism doable for ordinary Christians
• The three spiritual practices of doable evangelism
Conversationally Speaking - Elaine Hansen
More than 25 years ago, I took my first “listening” class and was crushed to realize – that every time I was in a conversation with someone and opened my mouth to “help” them – I was disrespecting them and disrespecting what God/the Holy Spirit was doing in them. It was a relief to learn how to put aside the urge to “fix” people and replace it with conversations that help.
Leigh and Diane’s Global Guide Service – Leigh Buchan and Diane Ellis
When they met several years ago, Leigh was a conservative christian and Diane was a new ager. Nevertheless these two single mom/real estate agents formed a close friendship and began a spiritual journey that would not only change them but many of their friends. With the encouragement of their pastors Rich and Rose Swetman, Leigh and Diane started their own missional movement and began to raise money and visit needy children in Peru, The Philippines and Tibet. They still work in real estate and lead teams of Christians, Non Christians and New Agers to serve needy children around the world.
Taking the World to Church – Jeff Smith
As a (former) associate pastor in the Calvary Church system and now as a graduate student at Seattle University I find myself pondering how it is that some of the best practices regarding community development go on outside the church while some of the best talk goes on inside. Appreciative inquiry, world-café and positive deviance are three examples that come to mind. I’ve begun to explore what the church can learn from the “world”. If that sounds interesting to you then join me for a provocative conversation about how to take the world to church.
The Glocal Pastor – Tim Soerens
Be it the global climate crisis, poverty, abuses of high capitalism, profound isolation and individualism, or a Church that needs to be saved, a common chorus among all of these crisis is the clarion call to live more locally. Local food, local politics, local businesses, and local church all require those of us leading churches to actually be involved in the fabric of our own local community. But it means that we have to listen to the annoying words of Jesus and love our neighbors.
Young Single Female Pastor Seeks Real Church – Jen Wright
The question is not so much does the church need to change? The question is can a 70-year-old small town church learn how to care again? The jury is still out but life continues to present its challenges regardless of age, sex or marital status. Jen shares what she’s been observing from behind the espresso machine and the sacred desk- where the buck stops with her.
Cultural Christianity Meets New Kind Of Christian - Bill Berger
While sitting in on a group of ministers who were learning about being relevant to the culture, I was questioned on why I don’t have the American flag and the Christian flag posted on our platform at our church. I made it clear that I am not a proponent of bringing the state into the church arena. I was then chastised and was given proof texts as to why I should be a patriot and a Christian. I was a bit shocked by the response and sat there waiting for the bell to ring so I could leave.
